Polonnaruwa was made Sri Lanka’s second Capital city by king Vijayabahu after he overthrew the Southern Indian Chola tribes which had invaded the city and had been using it as a military base . This ancient city has been recognized as a UNESCO  world heritage site and many of the ruins and relics are in still in a remarkable condition given that some of them date back to the 12th Century.

The Lankatilaka image, the Gal Vihara rock sculptures, and the Tivanka Pilimage are must sees when visiting this ancient city.
