This park is located on the North –West coast of the country approximately 180 Km’s from the capital City of Colombo and it is the largest and one of the oldest national parks in Sri Lanka.
The existence of “Willus” (Natural lakes/ sand-rimmed water basins) that fill with rainwater is a unique feature of this park, and there are said to be nearly sixty willus and tanks spread throughout the area. Unlike the other national parks which are mainly famed for their Elephants, the major attractions in the Wilpattu park are the Leopards and the endemic sloth bears. In addition to these creatures one can also spot deer, elephants, endemic birds, amphibians and reptiles in this park. The best time to visit this park is during the months of February and October.
