Situated just 60km away from the capital city, Bentota is the perfect location for a family holiday as it is known for its safe swimming conditions and offers an abundance of water sports activities that the whole family can enjoy. It is one of the oldest tourist resort areas and is therefore well equipped to handle all the needs of its visitors.
The west coast starts from Kalpitiya in the north west of the country and stretches down to Colombo, while the stretch of beach from Wadduwa to Hikkaduwa (situated on the south west coast of the country) and the beautiful sun kissed beaches extending from Galle to Hambantota, are known as the southern beaches of the Island.
It is best to visit the west coast and the southern beaches from October to March.

One of most famous beaches in the country this stretch is inundated with hotels,
bars and restaurants. While it attracts various types of travellers, it is most favoured by the younger generation as it is a well known spot for wild night life. But partying is not all that Hikkaduwa offers. When not enjoying the sun and sand, visitors can go surfing or opt to go on a glass bottom boat ride to view the famous underwater coral reefs or even visit the turtle hatcheries in the area and learn about their conservation efforts.
Possibly one of the most untouched by tourism, this village comprises of a close knit fishing community, who are more than happy to share the ins and outs of their daily lives with visitors. However what this spot is most famed for, is dolphin and whale watching. Whilst one can just laze around and relax on the beach, there are other activities such as wind surfing and sailing that the more active visitor can indulge in. Owing to its untouched beauty and calm deserted stretches of sand, Mirissa is most sort after by those travellers who long for a tranquil holiday on the beach, void of the constant buzz and over- commercialization that some of the other destinations offer.
Mirissa is a hot spot for those who go on whale watching expeditions. There aren’t too many high end accommodation options in Mirissa, however the quaint guest houses and small hotels add to the charm of this small fishing island.
Often referred to as the golden mile, the Negombo beach has turned the area into a bustling resort town that is renowned for its delectable seafood, beach parties and of course a range of accommodation options that range from star rated hotels to budget hotels, as well as quaint little guest houses. The best area to stay in Negombo, would be down Lewis place or in close proximity to it as most of the resorts, restaurants and bars are situated down this road.
Negombo is conveniently located in close proximity to the Airport (Katuayake Bandaranayake International Airport) and it is only a 2hour drive from Colombo, therefore it is the ideal location for a visitor who is either in the country for a short layover or a just a few days.
Situated in the deep south, this is the furthest beach option on the southern coast. This beach is also famous for its coral reefs. Possibly because of its location in the deep south and the isolation that comes with it, this town offers its visitors two very different types of accommodation options, namely upmarket establishments in the west and beach cabanas and budget accommodation in the east.
Ranked as one of the best in the world , this beach is fast emerging as the most famous beach stretch in the country. Unawatuna is a cresent shaped stretch of sandy white beach which is enveloped by clear blue waters. This beach is not only breathtakingly beautiful, but it is possibly one of the safest in the island, as it is protected by a coral reef. Unawatuna is the ideal location for relaxed and tranquil holiday, but on the flip side, this little village in the south is well known for hosting some rocking parties that continue till dawn. Small beach front shops also offer visitors the service of renting equipment needed for snorkeling and scuba diving.
